I am a writer, documentary filmmaker, and video essayist. I am the author of The Girl from Foreign: A Memoir (The Penguin Press), and my other writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Kenyon Review, Story Magazine, ASAP/J, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, among other publications. My video essay Shadow Self: On Agnès Varda’s Documenteur was awarded the Audiovisual Essay Award at the 2025 Marienbad Film Festival, Second Prize of the Adelio Ferrero Award for International Video Essay, and was included in Sight and Sound’s Best Video Essays of 2025.
My credits as a documentary film producer include The September Issue, (A&E Films), The Education of Mohammad Hussein (HBO) and The Other Half of Tomorrow (Margaret Mead Film Festival, Opening Night Selection).
My work has been supported by fellowships from Fulbright, Kundiman and Yaddo. I am an Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Wesleyan University, and I live with my family in New Haven, Connecticut, and New York City.
