To Seek Home: The Bene Israel of India
Working collaboratively with her subjects, photographer and filmmaker Sadia Shepard has created the first comprehensive visual record of the Bene Israel in India, a small community of Jews who believe they are one of the lost tribes of Israel, shipwrecked on the western coast of India two thousand years ago. Shepard’s portraits illuminate a community in transition as members move from India to Israel, document the imprint of the community on Mumbai, and explore the unique cultural identity of a group that is both wholly Indian and wholly Jewish.

Exhibited at Cymroza Gallery in Mumbai, India in 2002 and at Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at Lincoln Center, New York, 2008. All images copyright Sadia Shepard, 2002.
